We now have a "Mounting Department" that specializes in Soka Gakkai Gohonzons: stain removal, remounting, and re-tailoring Gohonzons!

A first for a Soka Gakkai Buddhist altar specialty store: We now have a "mounting department" for stain removal and remounting of Soka Gakkai Buddha statues.
We have heard from Soka Gakkai members all over the country that they are in trouble and don't know what to do, saying things like, "The Gohonzon has become so old that the characters are no longer visible," "I'm worried about the stains that have appeared on the Gohonzon," and "When I rolled up the Gohonzon for a move, the stem came off."
On February 6, 2023, I was talking to someone who I was asking to reframe my work, and they said to me, "I'd be happy to become your mounting department!"
None of the Soka Gakkai Buddhist altar specialty stores have a mounting department. The person in charge of the mounting department has a strict first-class mounting skill qualification and is a recipient of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Excellent Skill Award. He is a wonderful person with over 60 years of faith and work experience.
He has traveled overseas for work at the Fuji Art Museum and has worked as a restorer of many national treasure-class artworks. He also has the best track record of restoring Buddha statues in his time, so if you want to ask him to re-groom your Buddha statue, he is the only person you can ask.

The fabrics used for the mounting are specially made brocade and satin from a long-established Kyoto textile workshop, and we can remove stains and dirt from your image and have it re-tailored using the highest level of skill.

① Regular mounting: Stain removal, remounting, and re-tailoring: Special mounting fabric from Kyoto is used (design is for reference only)

②Special mounting: Stain removal, mounting replacement, and re-tailoring: Special brocade mounting fabric + bag (design is for reference only)

* (The design is for reference only) The fabric for the mounting is custom-made in two types, regular and special, from a long-established Kyoto textile wholesaler. Since the fabric is ordered depending on how the image is tailored, the photo is of the sample we produced at our store, so please be aware that there may be slight differences in the design.
*The special mounting fabric uses gold thread. Gold thread is made by placing gold leaf on thin paper and cutting or twisting it into thin strips. When used for mounting, it makes the principal image shine even more golden.

Customer feedback: We received some wonderful reviews from customers who had their principal image re-covered. Please take a look.

Customer question: Is it cheaper to just remove the stains than to have the main image resurfaced? We have received this question, so we would like to answer it.
The principal image is made up of many layers of Japanese paper, a fabric called a mounting, and upper and lower axes.
The blank area with Namu Myoho Renge Kyo written on it is the Gohonzon (principle image). (It is also called Shoshi or Seishi.)
The surrounding mounting parts are pasted onto a paper backing that is backed by the principal image.
When removing stains from a principal image, the principal image will need to be re-attached in the same way as when it is re-covered.
The Gohonzon has several layers of backing, so these are removed one by one to leave a single Gohonzon.
The Gohonzon is then soaked in a special bleaching agent to remove the stains from the blank areas. It is not possible to remove the stains from just the blank areas of the Gohonzon.
Due to its structure, it is not possible to pinpoint the stained areas and apply a liquid to them like a dry cleaner would. Removing stains from a Gohonzon is the same as remounting and re-tailoring it. May 15, 2024: We visited a mounting store.
The specially made brocade satin fabric for mounting the principal image is made of gold and silk threads. I received the thread as a reference this time. I was able to see the cloth made by a long-established Kyoto store, which is the culmination of the craftsmanship of a craftsman who hand-weaves this thread for mounting. I was able to take the cloth that the mounter had in his hands during the explanation.
